2009 Summer Jamboree!

Clear skies, a great turnout of local adult and junior tennis players, and wonderful support from the local tennis community all contributed to the success of the new Jonesville Tennis Center’s first annual Jamboree on August 28th-30th. Activities during the three day inaugural event not only included several men’s and women’s doubles divisions, but also table tennis and beach tennis competitions, a raffle and silent auction, free spa services, and a bake sale. Special thanks to Tammy Gordon for coordinating the raffle, silent auction, and spa services, to Jade Park for preparing her fabulous pastries for the bake sale, and to Infinite Energy for sponsoring the barbecue lunch from Adam’s Ribs. In addition, on Friday evening, what was anticipated to be a small parent-child doubles tournament turned into a large, festive event, with over 50 teams participating in three divisions. Many parents and children got to know each other on a very different level by getting the rare opportunity to play tennis matches together. Lots of conversation and laughter radiated from the courts on a perfect late-summer evening.

Jonesville Tennis Center director Dave Porter donated all the proceeds of the Jamboree, which totaled $2000 after expenses, to the Gainesville Area Community Tennis Association, for funding of local junior tennis programs. These programs include USTA Jr. Team Tennis, a junior competitive tennis mentoring program, an extended-day program with Alachua County elementary schools, and a community outreach tennis and tutoring program. Thanks much to Dave for his generosity and his ongoing support of community tennis, and to all the volunteers and participants who made this event a great success.
